CODING SYSTEM

I use a code for each of my direct line in my tree. I also use the same system for files and in my family tree software.  I use the first three letters of the surname for the most distant relative on each line followed by a letter. The most distant is A and each child on each generation is A, B, C etc depending on birth order.  For example, my most distant Rowlands ancestor is John Rowlands, so the codes are:

Surnames in brackets indicate a married surname where the surname of the wife is unknown.

So why JOr/JOt and THs/Thm?

I have to do this as I have two JOHN lines, both my great-great-great grandmothers were called Ann JOHN. One married John Rowlands (JOr) and one married Thomas THOMAS (JOt). Same for Thomas, THs are family of Sina Thomas and THm for Mary Thomas. You will see this on other surnames where they are duplicated by from different lines. See all the family codes with explanations under the Family Codes page

Why A1, A2?

When I implemented the coding system I started at my most distant relative. Since then there are instances where I have more generations so rather than renumber everything (a mammoth task!) I have added numbers. With the Rowlands family I found another generation earlier than ROW-A so the previous generation became ROW-A1 to indicate that this person precedes John Rowlands. Two generations back from ROW-A is ROW-A2 I continued this with other lines. Siblings of these new generations are treated the same way as everyone else except with an added number
